Job Posting: Parliamentary Assistant

The office of the Honourable Rebecca Alty, Member of Parliament for Northwest Territories, is seeking a qualified candidate to join our team as a Parliamentary Assistant. Applications are being accepted from candidates available to work out of either the Ottawa or Yellowknife offices.

Responsibilities:

• Supporting the Member’s priorities in Ottawa and her constituency, through collaborating effectively with the Parliamentary Chief of Staff and the Constituency Assistants

• Monitoring and maintaining the Member’s public-facing email inbox, phone line, and physical mail, and assisting constituents with their requests.

• Staffing the Member at events and meetings as required, and conducting necessary follow-up/action items

• Assisting with the management of the Member’s website and social media profiles, including photography and video recording

• Drafting remarks, correspondence, mail products, and social media posts

• Assisting with the preparation and updating of the Member’s schedule

• Liaising regularly with other offices, including the Member’s own ministerial team, as well as the offices of other Ministers and Members

• Other duties as required

Working Conditions:

• This is a full time in-person position

• Availability to work outside of regular hours as needed is required

• Occasional travel between Ottawa and Yellowknife may be required

Required Skills and Competencies:

• A degree from a post-secondary institution or relevant experience

• General knowledge of government and current affairs

• Proven ability to interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner

• Competence with Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher)

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Highly organized with good administrative skills and attention to detail

• The ability to multi-task and work in a team environment

Assets:

• Experience working with Northern and Indigenous communities

• Awareness of the distinct issues facing residents of the Northwest Territories

• Experience working in a parliamentary or legislative office
